Washi paper has an important history and is deeply connected to the development of Japanese culture and daily life. Since papermaking techniques were introduced to Japan during the Asuka period, washi paper has served as a foundation for records, faith, and art.

In ancient times, it supported the formation of the Japanese nation and its spiritual culture, and was an indispensable part of cultural arts such as waka poetry, calligraphy, and picture scrolls, conveying the aesthetic sense and sensibilities of the Japanese people.

Furthermore, washi paper is widely used in everyday items, and is deeply rooted in the lives of the Japanese people. With such a long history and cultural value, washi paper is not just paper, but a material that conveys the history and spirit of the Japanese people, and it is still being cherished and passed down today.

AMETSUCHI's washi products are made using Tokuji washi paper (Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Inshu washi paper (Tottori Prefecture). Each sheet is hand-made by artisans and processed with persimmon tannins and konjac glue, making them durable and water-resistant.

Tokuji Washi is a traditional handmade Japanese paper that has been made in Tokuji, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is an intangible cultural property since the Kamakura period. It is made from rich natural resources (paper mulberry, mitsumata, etc.) and pure water, and is characterized by its rustic texture, durability, and soft feel.

Inshu washi paper is a handmade Japanese paper with a history of approximately 1,300 years in Tottori Prefecture (formerly Inaba Province). It is made from raw materials such as kozo, mitsumata, and gampi, and retains traditional techniques, making it a designated national traditional craft.

At AMETSUCHI, artisans handcraft each sheet of paper, processing it with persimmon tannins and konjac paste, using strong, water-resistant washi paper.

We made these accessories using washi paper that was left over when cutting other products. This was because we wanted to use up every last bit of washi paper that was handmade by artisans. AMETSUCHI comes with original incense, which gives off a pleasant fragrance all day long, helping you spend your day in comfort.
